ECOBOARD Benchmark

The ECOBOARD Project helps consumers choose a high-performance sustainable surfboard made with a reduced environmental impact.

The ECOBOARD Project label is the first, independent 3rd party, consumer facing “eco-label” for surfboards. It verifies the use of more sustainable materials in surfboards, made with the latest advancements in greener chemistry, recycled and renewable materials.

Our science-based program provides a simple “benchmark” for sustainable surfboard materials. Board builders who use these materials can produce surfboards with significant environmental and worker health benefits from reduced exposure to carcinogens.

The ECOBOARD Project Benchmark
An ECOBOARD must be made from at least one of the following materials:

  1. Blank: foam made from minimum 25% recycled foam or at least 25% biological content
  2. Resin: resin made from minimum 15% bio-carbon content with low or zero VOCs
  3. Alternative Structure: A surfboard structure made from sustainably sourced biological/renewable material (aka-wood) that provides the majority of the surfboard’s material and structural integrity – and therefore significantly reduces the amount of foam or resin needed to build the board

To source these materials, see the list of approved ECOBOARD Project – Qualified Materials currently available in the marketplace. Only surfboards made from these specific materials are eligible to receive the ECOBOARD Project label.

See the list of shapers who have agreed to offer surfboards built to the ECOBOARD Project Benchmark specification. Shapers should join by creating a free account with the ECOBOARD Project.

Surfboards made from these materials can be labeled by qualified builders and manufacturers with an ECOBOARD Project label.

These labels are individually hand stamped by Sustainable Surf with a unique code for tracking purposes, and then laminated onto the “verified” surfboard during the manufacturing process by the shaper or laminator.

A surfboard that carries the ECOBOARD Project “verified” label is defined by these three concepts:

  1. Performance: ECOBOARDs should have equivalent or better performance than boards made from industry standard materials.
  2. Ease of Manufacturing: ECOBOARDs should ideally require minimal changes in current manufacturing techniques, so that early adoption by the industry is possible.
  3. Environmental Benefits: ECOBOARDs must have a significant and meaningful reduction in environmental impact as measured by factors such as lifecycle CO2 emissions and chemical/VOC emissions.
