Brand Website
Brand Description A family run business based in Encinitas, Wegener manufacture surfboards in the United States, and try to source locally whenever possible.

Jon Wegener has been shaping for 21 years and has dreamed of doing nothing else except surfing and shaping. As a board maker Jon has always tried to find the right board for the right conditions. He loves to make and ride a huge variety of surfboards, from the raw wood of the Alaia, to the “traditional” fiberglass noserider, to the modern shortboard and anything in between. Jon truly believes that there is a time and a place for just about every type of board.

Jon Wegener and his brother Tom Wegener have created “sister” companies. While Wegener Surfboards is based in California, Tom Wegener surfboards is based in Queensland, Australia. They bring together their different approaches to surfing, and influences to collaborate on design and techniques. The outcome of this collaboration is pure functionality and enjoyment that is not stuck in any one style of surfing, but takes the best from the past and present.

A lot changed for Jon when he was introduced to Alaias and Paipos. The traditional concepts on what made a surfboard function, and what materials were best for making surfboards were all challenged by these seemingly flat pieces of wood that surf so well!

The ride… and more importantly the sustainability of the Alaia/Paipo cannot be beat.  If you want the most sustainable board possible… You will ride an alaia or paipo period. Convincing your average surfboard consumer of this fact has proven to be a challenge.  So Jon went back into the shaping-room with renewed vigor and imagination and started applying what he had learned with the Alaias and Paipos, to surfboards.

He came up with new models such as the Bluegill, which combines the slide of the Alaia with the float and paddle of foam, and the Cy model, a hand veneered 2+1 co-designed with Cyrus Sutton. But he also has become a huge proponent of the recycled or recyclable blank and Entropy resins and strives to use these new tools in every board he builds.  He isn’t there yet… you can help him reach his goal by demanding that your next surfboard be made A.S.A.P.!

Brand Description Otherwise known as “Vec”- Shawn is known throughout the world as a brand name of Surf. His mother, a native Hawaiian, and father, a native Cape Codder, it was inevitable that he would fall in love with surfing and the ocean.

He wasn’t always this way. Shawn actually started his action sport’s career as a pro snowboarder for Burton Snowboards and was the first pick for the US Olympic Team 1990. After an unfortunate accident where he injured his spine- he flew to Hawaii and learned to ride the big waves in Oahu.

But his heart was still on the Cape. So he packed his bags and headed home. He started the Boarding House. He helped pioneer the first pro contests in New England and traveled the coast with sponsors then sold the shop to his partner to move to Kauai to end finding himself a gifted surfboard shaper.

10,000 shaped surfboards later, shaping boards for Vec, Dick Brewer and Billy Hamilton and being one of the pioneers of the Stand Up Paddleboard. He has made boards for some of the best surfers throughout the world and is still surfing shooting pics and traveling to cold pristine locales for his sponsors and has been known to swim with Great White sharks.

His love for palm trees are getting lost as his love for pine trees is growing. New England is his home and he is trying to bring the community together through NESurf.com. Trying to create a image trough the site and through the clothes NESurf is developing. Watch for Vec in the future, you never know what he will be shaping, who will be riding them and where he will be surfing.

Qualifying boards Level One ECOBOARDS
Brand Website http://surfboardsfrommars.com
Brand Description Surfboards from Mars are 100% handcrafted by Mark Sarinana in Carlsbad, California. Surfboard models are generally made with wider, shorter templates where volume, surface area, and aspect ratio are taken into account. The overall goal is to create performance shortboards, fishes, and hybrids that can be surfed in a variety of wave moods. The boards generally have higher amounts of concaves, creating lift and allowing water to flow for added speed, and tapered rail lines which allow quick rail sinking into hollow waves. The idea is to have a board that can survive gutless surf; where width and area come into play; and can handle tubes- where thin rails and foam distribution are key. Our surfboard models are visually unconventional custom shapes, merged with classic styles to produce unique, quality designs.

Surfboards From Mars are shaped with lighter, recyclable, high quality, and high density EPS foam, and are glassed with environmentally conscious Bio Epoxy (Super Sap BRT) resin. These resins are the best on the market and have been proven to have a stronger, lighter, and more flexible lifespan than traditional surfboard resin, and are also a much cleaner choice for the environment.

Brand Description Since 1979 William “Stretch” Riedel has been creating distinctive and innovative custom hand built boards for surfing, sailing, kiting, and tow surfing. Born in Malibu, CA, he was taught to build boards by his father Mike Riedel, a shaper for Velzy Jacobs Surfboards in the 1960’s. His multitude of craftsmanship and wave riding skills eventually landed him in Santa Cruz where a life changing windsurfing accident in 1988 left him with partial paralysis. His enthusiasm for progressive wave riding continues daily with technological advancement, team feedback and a passion for building the best board possible.

Santa Cruz, California
Located blocks from the beach in mid-town Santa Cruz, the factory is prime location for scheming-up unique and alternative construction techniques. Stretch builds each individual board under the same roof in the largest dedicated EPS/EPOXY surfboard factory in Northern California. Combine that with a team of unbelievably talented riders, progressive designs and premium California coastline and you get some of the best wave riding imaginable.

Getting Results
“I begin shaping everyday before sunrise. With headphones on and tool in hand, there’s only one way I get the job done. I personally tend to every board so that my customers receive the same quality and scrutiny as any of my team riders. I never cut corners. All my boards receive 100% attention. That’s how we get results.”

Brand Website http://www.pyzelsurfboards.com/
Brand Description Jon Pyzel has been part of the surfing community for as long as he can remember, growing up surfing from a young age in the historic surfing town of Santa Barbara, CA.  After traveling around  the world looking for good waves, Jon realized that he needed to live somewhere with better waves in warmer water, making a permanent move to the North Shore of Oahu in 1992.

Getting his start fixing dings in the legendary Country Surfboards  factory, Jon quickly learned the ins and outs of the craft,  working  as a hot coater, laminator,  ghost shaper and finally shaping under his own label. It was a great enviroment to learn from some of the best shapers and glassers in the industry.

The combination of being surrounded by many of the world’s most talented surfers and shapers, and the high quality of the surf have given Pyzel a great opportunity to build world-class surfboards, becoming one of the most sought after  shapers for all kinds of surfers and waves.

Designing and shaping each board from scratch, Pyzel knows every curve, bend, and turn on the  boards he builds. The result is master craftsmanship and attention to detail that only decades of experience and a good eye can provide.

Today Jon lives on the beach in Hawaii with his wife and 2 daughters,  runs the Pyzel Surfboards factory on the North Shore and travels to shape in Australia, Europe, Brazil, Japan, Indonesia and California  (and surfs pretty much every day).
